The Canadian Championship was created by Spruce Meadows in 1976, but it was 1983 before it was contested by riders from both eastern and western Canada. It was recognized by the national equestrian federation as the official national championship in 1989. It moved from Spruce Meadows to the Royal Winter Fair in 2001.
