- Beerbaum claimed the only individual Olympic gold medal of his four-medal Olympic career with a remarkable comeback after a disatrous team competition. His bridle broke in the team competition, resulting in the worst placing for Germany in Olympic show jumping history. Beerbaum came back two days later to win the individual gold medal with no faults.

He was banned for being a professional, therefore, not eligible.The decision was overturned because it was revealed that he was related to the horse dealer for whom he rode. Three Olympic Games later he won the gold medal.
