  • Canada broke 32-year drought in individual medals and claimed a first-ever individual gold medal in show jumping
  • Eric Lamaze was also the only double-medalist (indivdual gold plus team silver) for Canada in these Olympics, in any sport
  • Lamaze and Rolf Goran Bengtsson jumped off for the gold medal and had identical jump-off times
  • Although Bengtsson was not among the individual medal favourites, this marked second Olympic silver medal, having earned team silver in 2004

  • The 2000 Games saw the emergence of Saudi Arabians as medal contenders. The surprise individual bronze medal won by a Saudi Arabian was almost an individual gold medal, the individual contest was decided by a close jump-off for the gold medal.

1992 Barcelona, Spain

  • Beerbaum claimed the only individual Olympic gold medal of his four-medal Olympic career with a remarkable comeback after a disatrous team competition. His bridle broke in the team competition, resulting in the worst placing for Germany in Olympic show jumping history. Beerbaum came back two days later to win the individual gold medal with no faults.

  • Gold medalist Mancinelli had been banned in advance of the 1964 Olympics and then re-instated just before competition was to begin. He was banned for being a professional, therefore, not eligible.The decision was overturned because it was revealed that he was related to the horse dealer for whom he rode. Three Olympic Games later he won the gold medal.
  • Canada's Jim Day tied for fourth place.
