World Cup Trivia

  • 31 World Cup Finals have been held, to date
Youngest Winner
  • Mario Deslauriers is the youngest-ever winner of the World Cup Final, having won it at 19.
  • Deslauriers' mount, Aramis, remains the youngest ever horse to win the title, having been 7 at the time.
Oldest Winner
  • Hugo Simon, of Austria, is the oldest-ever winner of the World Cup Final, winning his third title a few months before his 55th birthday.
  • Shutterfly, who won the title three consecutive times under German Meredith Michaels Beerbaum, is the oldest horse to have won the World Cup Final. He was 16 when he won the 2009 title.
Consecutive Winners
  • Ian Millar was the first rider ever to successfully defend the World Cup title -- an achievement that has been equalled by four riders since. Millar was also the first rider to win the title twice on the same horse (Big Ben).
  • Big Ben placed in the top-8 for five consecutive years
  • Rodrigo Pessoa, of Brazil, Austria's Hugo Simon, and Germany's Meredith Michaels Beerbaum are the only three-time World Cup winners. Pessoa and Beerbaum are the only three-time consecutive winners. Simon's first two wins were 17 years apart.
American and German Riders Dominate
  • Six Americans have won seven World Cup Finals. Conrad Homfeld won two, on different mounts, six years apart.
  • Americans dominated the early years, winning almost every World Cup Final from 1980 to 1987. Only Mario Deslauriers, riding Aramis, broke the American winning streak, in 1984. The North American streak continued until 1989, with Ian Millar winning in 1988 and 1989.
  • Despite German domination of other major show jumping championships it took 14 years of World Cup Finals to produce a German winner.  In 1993 Ludger Beerbaum became the first German to win the World Cup title. Germany has placed at least one rider in the top-three in almost every World Cup Final since.  In recent years, the Germans have been as dominant as the Americans were in the World Cup's early years. In 2009, a German victory capped an eight-year run that produced six German winners. That includes three wins by Ludger Beerbaum's sister-in-law, Meredith Michaels Beerbaum.
Women in the Show Jumping World Cup Final
  • Four women have won six World Cup Finals. American Melanie Smith, on Calypso, was the first female winner in 1982. The last women to win it, Meredith Michaels Beerbaum, did so three times. All of the female winners, except Beerbaum, were riding for the U.S.  Although Beerbaum represents Germany, she is American-born.
  • Lisa Carlsen is the top-performing Canadian woman ever in a World Cup Final, having finished 8th in 1989 on Kahlua. Her achievement that year was over-shadowed by Ian Millar's record-setting win, but showed the strength of the Canadian contingent at the time.
